Become an internet celebrity

Postby Derek » Wed Aug 13, 2014 10:44 am

Is it your dream for internet immortality and celebrity?
Do you long for your chance at millions of internet bucks?

Well keep looking because retrorpg.net offers none of that.

But what we can offer is an opportunity to spew unfiltered, opinionated shit that no one cares about, into a microphone for 10 minutes or more, or less, (it dont matter, none of this matters).

To kinda fill in the gaps left behind by Don and I when we fail to do our own jobs (such as now with LTTP), we want to try to allow one person (we may expand this later depending on success) to host their own show.
The show will be considered part retrorpg.net which means you will be ruled by dictators Don and myself.

Requirements:
Must be a decent orator. Not Mike Rowe level but able to spew out a complete sentence with minimal stuttering and zero use of the word like as a filler. (loyal fans already know my pet peve regarding that).
Must already have recording equipment and understand how to use said equipment. (we wont teach you how to podcast. Either you already know, or you figure it out)
Be 18 or older (older is better)
Have a solid understanding of video games for the past 30+ gears. (not encyclopedic level, but you should at least know that pong was not the first video game nor was the 2600 the first console)

What you will be doing:

You and (maybe) one other person will record at least once a month.
Time of show can be 1 minute to 45ish minutes.
Subject matter is anything game related.
Try to avoid time sensitive topics, news or anything of that nature.

How it works:
We give you a wordpress account, you record your show, upload it somewhere, edit your wordpress article, either Don or myself will get the show add the mp3 to your article and publish.
"but wouldnt it be easier to just give FTP access?"
Yes. But no one gets FTP access. At least not right away. Yes, im aware accounts alcan be created that limit how much someone can do, still doesn't change our stance.

How to apply:
Record a 10 minute or longer show detailing who you are, the subject matter, a short roadmap of the show, and whatever subject you decided to discuss. (make it count because it will be used as your first episode), upload it somewhere, post link here for all to hear, and wait to be judged.
Audience input will be used to sway our opinion.

Tryouts will be held starting now and ending when we feel we found someone.

Feel free to ask questions.

Huh, this sounds like an excellent idea Derek. I wouldn't mind jumping on this and give it a try, it would be a good thing to do as a community as well I think.
Maybe if it becomes a success some of the members can come together and work on one together. But yes, I'd be interested in taking part, you can shoot me a message with what I'd need to get started. :)

we dont have the time to walk anyone through the process.
Literally, zero free time exists between us to educate people on anything. (case in point, no podcast this month due to zero time)

Sorry Derek, I misread part of the OP. I'll record a 10 minute introduction file and upload it to the forums. Is it worth having a separate thread for entries,
or would it be better to keep them all here?

Better organized that way.

I'll redo all of this in wordpress at a later date if you would like..But essentially my idea is a short 10- to 30 min podcast where I rate and review one of the ridiculously overpriced and or rare games in my collection. Iv'e been collecting video games for 20+ years and currently own 3000+ games on 30+ consoles and of said 3000+ at least 200 are "rare and/or valuable". Each month I'll pull one off the shelf, play it, tell you its current ebay price, and let you know weather or not I'd buy it at that price. (from a collectors standpoint,) I know little about recording, or editing, but I spent a bit of time learning, and created this https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/share ... ujy-AibcO4

Sorry in advance about sound quality, If you deem me worthy i'll invest in new equipment, currently using antiquated gear from when I thought I was a musician. Thanks for this opportunity guys

I like the concept and pilot show sounds good. Will have to see what Derek thinks but to me sounds like a good idea. Would be cool to have an episode a month in the middle of the month to fill in the gaps between our episodes.

Funny you picked Zombie Nation because I just heard about this game today. James and Mike just reviewed this game on their youtube channel: http://youtu.be/BRD1YHieUIU

Can't believe people are paying $150 on ebay for a crappy game like this. Goes to show you there are no longer good deals on ebay when it comes to retro games.

not hating it.

But i disagree with Don.
it doesnt sound good.
it sounds like ass.
But that's expected of a new show.

popping of the Ts, Ps, Cs, and just about every other letter of the alphabet. At the very minimum, a wind screen is needed for whatever mic you are currently using.
Im not that concerned right now about it, but something to pay attention to for future shows.
brownie points for the ass kissing at the end.

So you have a yes from the both of us, but we arent the audience, so after we get some more feedback from the others, we can make it official. In the mean time, i suggest fine tuning the quality, and maybe even getting a few more recorded to build a back log.
Podcasting is fun, but the novelty of it wears off super fast and a fun hobby can quickly turn into boring work.

I thought it was great, I love the music introduction too. I'd never even heard of this game before but it sounds pretty interesting too, and you clearly did research towards it also so that's a plus. I'm looking forward to what you choose next if you decide to work towards a second episode also. I didn't have any issues with the audio though, I was worried the intro/outro might drown out your voice but it didn't, so I don't think you need to worry about audio levels. You have a great radio voice. I dunno, probably best to wait until other community members chime in with impressions but I think this was a really solid introduction episode mate.

Now that Derek agrees I say go for it and start on episode 2.

I see what Derek is saying about audio quality but if you go listen to our first few episodes it sounded like I recorded my audio through a potato.

Righto, I'll get started on some more episodes with my current setup then. Which is of course ass, but I do have a new mic and mixerboard in the works so hopefully that will take care of those issues. Now would you like me to post the episodes here, or send links via a PM? I'm cool with whatever, again, thanks for the feedback

More things about the show that noticed since having listened to it with headphones.

The background roar. Im assuming that is your computer. If you are unable to silence it, you can filter the noise via most recording software.
the roar even persists in the intro/outro, which tells me you arent muting your mic soon enough/unmuting it too soon.

these are nit-picks, but given enough time, nit-picks turn into large annoyances.

Working on sound issues, my wife purchased a very nice condenser microphone, mixerboard, and headphones from a failed music student. I recorded a second episode(several times actually) and it sounds infinitely better, but there is still room for improvement. I've additionally been watching tutorials on improving sound and filtering background noise.

I have looked all over the site and can not find episodes of "Is it Worth it?" beyond the first one. Am I stupid or blind or are they really that hard to find (or not there at all)? Somebody help me out.

The other episodes are on a different section of the forums only accessible to admins.

We're going to start releasing episodes soon. Episode 1 of "Is it Worth it?" around Nov 1st with a new one to follow every month. These will be going up on the main site and iTunes.

Hey guys, a couple buddies and I have been trying to start up a podcast of our own, non relevant to this show, but have had trouble getting everyone together as a couple travel for work. There is one other guy and myself who have been the most dedicated to it and have talked about a side project where we can gain experience and have fun while we work on getting the larger group one off the ground. While still doing the side project of course. Then I had a thought, why not see if we can do it under the RetroRPG umbrella and help the community grow. I already slaved away for like four hours on a mediocre cover art for a hat I never received. Why not take the next step.
If Derek and Don are still open to more shows, what would you, the community, all 14 of you, like to hear about retro gaming wise. Throw out some ideas and we'll put something together. Thanks guys and girl.

Edit- thinking about going as far back as possible and playing a game of the year. Each show being a different random year.
